Chemotherapy of murine leprosy. VII. The effect of cycloserine (seromycin) on mouse leprosy.
نویسنده
چکیده
Cycloserine (Seromycin) has been reported to have definite antituberculosis activity in human infection (6, 7, 8, 11, 12), but no effect in the experimental tuberculosis of mice (5, 13). In experimental tuberculosis of guinea-pigs, the antibiotic was also found inactive by two groups of investigators (9, 13), although later some histological improvement was reported by one of these groups (10). For a better understanding of the variations in the activity of cycloserine in different hosts, studies on experimental mycobacterial infections other than tuberculosis seem desirable. Probably, also, an infection can be found that is more closely correlated with human tuberculosis in respect to the action of this antibiotic than is tuberculosis in the mouse or guinea-pig. Since murine leprosy has been found to be a useful tool in studies of the anti mycobacterial activity of various compounds (2, 3, 4), the effect of cycloserine was studied in this disease.3

Chemotherapy of murine leprosy. V. The effects of various combinations of 4, 4 -diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), streptomycin and isoniazid on mouse leprosy.
In previous communications (3-5) I have reported, among other things, that 4-4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), streptomycin, and isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide) possess definite therapeutic activity in mouse leprosy, and that the combination of DDS and streptomycin showed an additive effect. The effects of various combinations of DDS, streptomycin and isoniazid on mouse leprosy are repo...
متن کاملChemotherapy of murine leprosy. II. The effects of streptomycin, sulfones and isonicotinylhydrazines on mouse leprosy.
The effectiveness of the sulfones in the treatment of human leprosy is well known (9, 11). The antileprosy activity of streptomycin has been reported by several workers (6, 9, 11, 18). However, the action of these drugs on murine leprosy is stilI not established. Prom in has been reported to have an inhibitory action on rat leprosy (2, 5) and on mouse leprosy (8). Diasone has been considered ef...
متن کاملChemotherapy of murine leprosy. I. The use of mouse leprosy as the chemotherapeutic test.
Experimental chemotherapy of murine leprosy in both the rat and the mouse has recently been studied by several investigators. The infection was usually produced by subcutaneous inoculation, which results in a disease of very chronic course. By this route the mouse was found to be less susceptible than the rat (2, 5). In both species a long period of observation -i.e., 5 to 18 months-was needed ...
متن کاملDe-Novo Presentation of Histoid Leprosy on an Unusual Site
Histoid Leprosy (HL) is a rare variant of Lepromatous Leprosy, occurring in long-standing cases, mostly in a background of acquired drug resistance. Patients usually present with sudden onset multiple nodules and plaques, most often involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue of trunk and lower limbs. Here we report an unusual case of de novo (without any history of prior anti-leprotic therapy) ...
متن کاملBiochemical and ultrastructural study of the relationship between lysosomal enzyme activities and chemotherapy.
One of th e ultrastructural charac teristics of lepra cells in human leprosy is the occurrence of opaque droplets around the bacilli (D. 12) . Electron microscopic cytochemistry showed tha t these droplets contain acid phosphatase, and consequently they were named "lysosomal substances" (10) . In addition it was observed that chemotherapy, especially with DDS, elicits the formation of the lysos...
